A stylish isometric hack-and-slash for up to two players that has become one of the pricier US carts.

Arcus Odyssey is an isometric action game from Wolf Team with cooperative play for two, in which four heroes try to stop an evil sorceress from returning. It came out in Japan on 14 June 1991 and in North America in September 1991, where Renovation Products published it. Motoi Sakuraba composed the music.

ACE's reviewer David Upchurch called it one of the finest examples of the arcade adventure genre on the Mega Drive. Gamefan, looking back in 1993, held it up as a top action-adventure game and thought it better on the Genesis than on the Super NES.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199484%

“The graphics in this Genesis masterpiece are both highly detailed and beautifully painted, in the tradition of Japanese fantasy adventures. … Arcus Odyssey is the best so far!”

— GamePro, September 1991

“The 3-D graphics of the gaming screens are good, though not as impressive as those displayed in the animated introduction.”

— Video Games & Computer Entertainment, November 1991

“The object is to guide your hero(s) (it's two-player simultaneous) around a number of forced perspective levers in search of the witch-queen Castorima. Excellent, and addictive.”

— MegaTech, February 1992

“Arcus Odyssey is peculiar game which can be likened to a 3D Gauntlet clone’ The object is to guide your hero(s) (it's two-player simultaneous) around a number of forced perspective levers in search of the witch-queen Castorima. Excellent, and addictive.”

— MegaTech, March 1992

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the pricier ones, and the risk tier is Medium, so check a listing carefully. A Western Genesis cart has no notch in its shell, so a flat shell with a notch is a repro sign, and for a copy at this price ask for a photo of the board. The Japanese cart usually costs noticeably less than the US one, though its cartridge has a different shape and fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
