About Army Men: Sarge's Heroes

One morning Sarge is resting in his cot when the Tan launch a surprise attack on the Green base. Sarge and the Colonel are forced to retreat just as the base is overrun. But in the chaos, Sarge's entire team of elite soldiers, Bravo Company, has been captured by the Tan. Worse yet, the Tan have made an amazing discovery: blue portals that lead to the real world! They use these portals to take amazing weapons of war from the real world into the plastic world including magnifying glasses, deadly robot action figures, and fire crackers. It's up to you, as Sarge, to rescue your team and put an end to the blue portals and Tan's evil schemes. Control Sarge in this Army Men third-person shooter. You will wage war across Tan-infested territories, both in the real and plastic world. Make Sarge proud as you battle the Tan army across 14 levels, utilizing 13 unique weapons like sky rockets and spray cans. Fight against not only infantrymen, tanks, and helicopters, but also killer toy robots and insects. This third game in the Army Men series adds several new features, including 3DO's unique Plastosheen lighting effects, which give the army men a real-life plastic shine. Also included is a multiplayer mode. Choose your character and even your color and duke it out with your friends. You can choose from many different weapons and battle each other in areas from the game or exclusive multiplayer levels. Even incorporated is the portal system, by which you can enter blue portals and come out anywhere in the level.

A third-person army-men adventure with a likable concept and clumsy controls, worth owning as a cheap multiplayer curiosity rather than a hidden gem.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of Army Men: Sarge's Heroes, a third-person shooter in The 3DO Company's series based on green plastic toy soldiers. 3DO developed and published it, and it reached North America in September 1999 and Europe in April 2000. The N64 game has 14 missions, and its multiplayer modes support up to four players.

Electronic Gaming Monthly's January 2000 review gave it a mixed verdict. It credited the story as the best feature and named the controls and camera as the worst. It is a game for the series' fans rather than a lost classic.

How it was made

Developed and published by The 3DO Company.

Before you buy

The US cartridge sits right around the median price for the library and the fake risk is low. PAL copies cost about the same loose and noticeably more complete. Complete copies sell for a few times the loose price, which is where a buyer's money goes. Nintendo listed the game among those enhanced by the Expansion Pak, which is optional, and the Rumble Pak is optional too, so a buyer needs neither to play.
