A talky Tengen platformer that is cheap in the US and far costlier as a Japanese cart.

Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt is a single-player platformer made and published by Tengen, designed by Richard L. Seaborne. It reached North America in November 1993 and Japan on 25 December 1993. Tengen marketed it on its many lines of digitized speech, which was unusual for the time, and the box calls it an excellent educational game for all ages.

“Similar in game play to other hop-n-bop games starring cute furry creatures, Awesome Possum may live up to its name in sound and speed, but its graphics are more like a real possum -a little slow and tired.”

— GamePro, December 1993

“The scrolling is a bit too choppy to make this a game with long-term appeal!”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, November 1993

“Tons of speech make this game seem good at first, but the gameplay soon shoots it in the foot. Run a bit, jump a bit, then run a bit more. It tries to be 'green' with lots of environmental questions for you to answer, but unfortunately this only serves to make it even tackier than ever.”

— MegaTech, March 1994

“You'll just want to shut him up — he talks constantly through four worlds of three levels each.”

— Game Players, May 1994

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system."

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the middle. The Japanese cart usually costs far more than the US one, especially complete, so the US cart is the sensible buy unless you want the Japanese release. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
