A lovely Ancient action-adventure and one of the pricier US carts, worth checking before you pay.

Beyond Oasis was developed by Ancient and published by Sega. Japan got it as The Story of Thor on 9 December 1994, and North America and Europe followed in March 1995. It is an action-adventure with Yuzo Koshiro composing the music.

Game Players called it a huge RPG from Sega: the control is a little wonky and there are no shops or towns, but it kept its reviewer playing for a long time.

“Perhaps not quite as indepth an RPG as Landstalker, but for sheer thrills and iaw-dropping graphics, The Story Of Thor is a must.”

— Sega Magazine, March 1995

“If this is the way that Sega is going with adventure games, then l'm all for it.”

— Game Informer, March 1995

“The Megadrive RPG scene was dominated by Shining Force until this came along. Not only an RPG but an action adventure as well, this offers the best in strategy gaming”

— Mean Machines Sega, February 1996

Before you buy

Among US carts this is one of the pricier ones, and it is a known repro target, so for a copy at this price ask for a photo of the board. The notch is a quick check: a Western Genesis cart has no notch in its shell. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. The European cart usually costs much less than the US one. The Japanese cart (The Story of Thor) usually costs about the same loose and less complete, and has a different cartridge shape.
