The Genesis Bomberman for friends with a multitap, and a cheaper buy in Europe.
On the Genesis this is Mega Bomberman, a redevelopment by Westone of the PC Engine's Bomberman '94, published by Sega. It came out in Europe on 23 November 1994 and in North America in February 1995. Because the Genesis has no fifth controller port, it supports four players instead of five.
GamePro called it one of the best Bomberman games, praising the new levels, new enemies and animal powerups, and recommended it to any Genesis owner with three friends and a multitap.
How it was made
Hudson first asked Factor 5 to make a Genesis Bomberman, codenamed Mega Bomberman. Hudson liked the demo but reconsidered and instead licensed the project to Westone, makers of the Wonder Boy series, for a direct conversion of Bomberman '94 to be published by Sega.
What the press said at the time
“Rather than porting the rather dated Super NES game over lock, stock and barrel, Hudsonsoft have taken ideas from virtually every version of the game in existence, and created the ultimate Bomberman in the process.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Genesis game is a re-development of the PC Engine's Bomberman '94 by Westone, published by Sega in 1994.
It has fewer multiplayer options and some different music than the PC Engine original.
Because the Genesis lacks a fifth controller port, Mega Bomberman supports four players instead of five.

Before you buy
Among US carts this sits above the median. The European cart usually costs much less than the US one, loose and complete. For four-player games, Sega Retro lists it as working with both Sega's Team Player and EA's 4 Way Play. Note that EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games, while Sega's later Team Player (MK-1647) runs both in its EXTRA mode. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
