Atari 5200 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

The most valuable released cartridge in the 5200 library, and the one title where a counterfeit or flashcart is a real worry.

Bounty Bob Strikes Back! is Big Five Software's Atari computer platformer, ported to the 5200 in 1985, and it was the only 5200 cartridge released that year. AtariAge credits Chris Mikolyski for graphics and Bill Hogue as programmer. It is on Atari 50.

Collectors chase it because it is the scarcest and most valuable released 5200 cart by a wide margin, and it trades rarely in any form. The game's 40 KB bank-switching scheme is why it has the odd reputation of being hard to reproduce.

How it was made

AtariAge credits Chris Mikolyski for graphics and Bill Hogue as programmer. Big Five Software published the 5200 cartridge.

Also on other platforms

Atari 8-bit · ZX Spectrum

  • Atari 8-bit. The Atari 8-bit original shipped on a ROM cartridge of 40K, up from 16K for the first game.
  • ZX Spectrum. Retro Gamer readers voted the ZX Spectrum version the 19th best game of all time in 2004.

Before you buy

Medium risk, purely on value. A forum thread from 2012 says a small number of reproductions were made years earlier, though it also says the bank-switching makes copies hard and the programmer discouraged them, and the AtariMax SD multicart can run the game, so a working cart in an odd shell may be a flashcart or reproduction until opened. A genuine cart is a green shell with a color label, so treat a red or black shell, or an unlabeled or handwritten label, as a flag. Boxes came in a picture-label version and a silver-foil version. Insist on photos of the label, shell and board, and expect to pay a premium for a complete copy.
