Pole Position II is a 1983 racing video game developed and published by Namco for arcades. It is the sequel to the 1982 game Pole Position. Atari, Inc. released the game in North America. Atari also released a port as the pack-in game for its Atari 7800 ProSystem in 1986. Pole Position arcade machines can be converted to Pole Position II by swapping several chips.

The 7800's pack-in game, a solid arcade racer and the single most common cartridge in the library.
General Computer Corporation developed the 7800 Pole Position II, and Atari packed it with the console. In 1984 plans it was to be built into the console's ROM later in the year, but in the end it stayed a cartridge in the box. Computer Entertainer's 1984 hardware preview named it among the first games meant to use the Pro-Line stick's second fire button.
Period coverage was warm. ANALOG's hands-on at the 1984 press conference called it an excellent game, and the magazine later named the 7800's Pole Position II among the system's knockout versions of arcade games, beside Joust and Robotron.
How the Atari 7800 version differs
Pole Position II was one of the first 7800 games to need the new controller's dual-button design.
Computer and Video Games gave the 7800 version 84%.
Atari also released a port as the pack-in game for its Atari 7800 ProSystem in 1986.

Before you buy
The easiest 7800 game to find, and often already included with a console. Pro-Line joystick, one player. There are two label variants, the Pole Position label and the Atari color label, both catalog number CX7808, and both are common. If you are buying a console, check that the cart and both sticks are in the box. No documented counterfeits.
