A tile-matching puzzler that reached the Genesis through the Sega Channel download service in 1996, so any cartridge of it needs a closer look.

BreakThru! is a tile-matching puzzle game that started on computers in 1994. The Genesis version came out in 1996 through the Sega Channel, the subscription service that let subscribers download games to their console for as long as it stayed switched on. It matches the Super NES version of the game. Spectrum HoloByte published it in North America, with Artech Digital Entertainment credited as the Genesis developer.

Allgame praised the game's simple, strategic play while finding the graphics and sound effects less than dazzling.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version was released in 1996 only through the Sega Channel download service.

It is identical to the Super NES version.

Also on other platforms

Windows · Mac · MS-DOS · Super NES · Game Boy · Sega Saturn · PlayStation

  • Game Boy. GamePro said the Game Boy version's eye-straining graphics hurt the gameplay, a problem considerably eased on the Super Game Boy.
  • Sega Saturn. The Saturn and PlayStation ports were released only in Japan, published by Shoeisha a year after the original.

Before you buy

Because the Genesis game was a Sega Channel release, a seller offering a cartridge should be asked where it came from and for clear photos of the cart and its board. Check any cart you are offered carefully before paying.
