A home version of Data East's Marvel arcade brawler that sits above the middle among US carts.
This is the Genesis version of Captain America and The Avengers, based on Data East's arcade beat 'em up in which Marvel's Avengers fight the Red Skull. Data East published it in North America in December 1992 and Sega published it in Europe in 1993. It was co-developed by Data East, ISCO and Opera House.
What the press said at the time
| Video Games & Computer Entertainment Issue 48 | January 1993 | Overall 6 (Sound/Music 6, Graphics 6, Playability 5) |
| GamePro Issue 43 | February 1993 | Graphics 4.5, Sound 4.0, Control 4.0, FunFactor 4.0 |
| MegaTech Issue 17 | May 1993 | 57% |
| MegaTech Issue 18 | June 1993 | MT RATING: 57% |
“Captain America and the Avengers is an amazingly clutzy translation of the arcade coin-op, which was pretty amazingly clutzy, too, when you think about it. ... What resulted would have been barely playable, if not for the simultaneous two-player option.”
“Captain America is surefire action entertainment for both comic and non-comic book fans alike.”
“It's a fun (if short-lived) two-player romp, but don't expect the coin-op.”
“AWould have been an excellent use of the Marvel characters... ...Had the graphics not been so dismal and the game so easy to complete.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Genesis version was co-developed by Data East with ISCO and Opera House, and Sega published it in Europe for the Mega Drive; like the NES game, it was developed in Japan but not released there.
Sega Pro's preview said all the coin-op features were retained, even the chaotic two-player action.

- Arcade. The arcade game was sold in two forms: a four-player version with one character per position, and a two-player version with a choice of four characters.
- NES. The NES game with the same title is a different side-scrolling action platformer, with only Captain America and Hawkeye playable.
- Super NES. Game Players found the Super NES version basic next to other recent comic-book games, but with an old-time comic-book feel.
Before you buy
Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs about the same as the US one, loose or complete, so buy whichever is easier to find. The game also came out on the Super NES and Game Gear, so check that a listing is for the Genesis.
