The series' first 3D outing is atmospheric and flawed, and Next Generation found it merely average.

Castlevania, sometimes called Castlevania 64, was developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo 64. It reached North America in January 1999, Japan in March and Europe in May. You choose between Carrie Fernandez and Reinhardt Schneider, a Belmont, and fight toward Dracula's return. An expanded version, Legacy of Darkness, followed later the same year as a separate game.

Next Generation's March 1999 review found it an average action game with adventure elements, praising the moody soundtrack and dark fantasy setting but saying it failed to revitalize a series defined in 2D. Game Informer's Tim Turi, looking back in 2012, called it frustrating and flawed, though he held a soft spot for its lonely atmosphere.

“And, so, with some ace writing in tow — and fantastic cut scenes — Castlevania eventually proves spellbinding. And there's a lot to be said for that, we reckon.”

— N64 Magazine, March 1999

“Castlevania turned out to be a surprisingly satisfying 3D adventure/platform hybrid that packs great graphics, an awesome story and challenging (though at times frustrating) gameplay.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, March 1999

“Admittedly, it's difficult for any 3D title on N64 to outshine Nintendo's elven Link, but what Castlevania does possess in its favor (an appropriately moody soundtrack and an immersive, dark fantasy environment) can't elevate how average the gameplay is.”

— Next Generation, March 1999

“Add to all this a sharply scripted, well-observed plot complete with a multitude of in-game cut scenes (a la Lylat Wars and Zelda) and Castlevania is the closest equivalent to actually being in a horror movie yet.”

— N64 Magazine, April 1999

Before you buy

The US cartridge sits above the library median when loose, and a complete copy costs several times the loose price. PAL loose copies cost somewhat more than US ones while PAL complete copies cost less. Japanese loose copies cost about the same as US ones, and Japanese complete copies cost less. The fake risk is low.
