A revised, expanded take on Konami's first 3D Castlevania that keeps the series' moody look and costs a lot.

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is a prequel and expanded version of the earlier Castlevania on the N64, released later in 1999. It revises the first game with improved graphics, added villains and alternate versions of some levels. Konami Computer Entertainment Kobe developed it, and it reached North America in December 1999, Japan later that month as Akumajou Dracula: Legend of Cornell, and Europe in March 2000.

It supports the Expansion Pak for higher-resolution textures, but Time Extension's ranking of the series says the frame rate drops badly with the Pak installed, so the plain console may be the better way to play.

How it was made

Konami Computer Entertainment Kobe developed it and Konami published it. Masahiko Kimura is credited as composer.

“But there's heavy repetition here, and simply not enough fresh stuff to warrant wading through the game's more tedious areas again.”

— N64 Magazine, February 2000

Before you buy

Progress saves to a Controller Pak, not the cartridge, so budget for one. The Expansion Pak is optional. The US cartridge is one of the pricier carts in the library, with sealed copies far above that. The PAL release sells for less loose and about the same complete. At this price, ask the seller for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test; a cart that boots proves nothing.
