Rebellion made this AND Alien vs. Predator, same year, same platform. The difference was budget.

A racing game that can't hold a framerate can't communicate speed, and this one can't: handling feels disconnected, momentum is absent, and the flat-shaded tracks read as empty. There's a real F1 game underneath — three modes, selectable weather, vehicle customization — but the presentation never delivers.

It's the cleanest illustration of the Jaguar's actual failure mode. The hardware could do things — Rebellion proved it months later with Alien vs. Predator on the same silicon. Atari couldn't fund development properly, studios delivered underfunded work on tight schedules, and reviewers blamed the console. It still sold 20,257 copies by April 1995 — ninth on the platform, which says more about the thin catalogue than the game.

Worth knowing

  • Shops were taking pre-orders for it as Checkered Flag 2. Retailer listings in Electronic Gaming Monthly through 1994 advertise the Jaguar game as "Checkered Flag 2" — the name it carried while Rebellion were building it, before it became Redline Racing and finally shipped simply as Checkered Flag. The 2 was not a sequel number to the Jaguar game; it referred back to Rebellion's Lynx Checkered Flag of 1991. Buyers were reserving a game under a title that never appeared on a box.

Before you buy

Common and cheap; sealed copies still surface at modest prices, which tells you how many went unsold. Worth owning as half of the Rebellion pairing. No counterfeit concern.

Buying a Jaguar cartridge

Cartridges are the durable half of this library — the risk is provenance, not decay. The platform has an active post-commercial scene, so the question is usually which era a cartridge is from rather than whether it still works.

  • Ask for a photo of the label edge and the cartridge back. Reproductions are usually printed on adhesive photo stock and sit proud of the label recess.
  • Donor shells are the common trick: sanding marks on the back, or adhesive ghosting where an older label was lifted, are the strongest signals.
  • Cartridges are region-free on this platform, so a cheaper PAL copy plays on a North American console — a price difference is not evidence of a fake.
