The best-regarded of the N64's Cruis'n ports, though it is still a shallow arcade racer you buy for a cheap, easy ride.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of Cruis'n World, the arcade racer from Midway. Eurocom developed the N64 port and Nintendo published it, with Europe getting it in June 1998 and North America in September 1998. It adds a Moon track, unlocked after finishing the Cruise the World mode.

Computer and Video Games (September 1998) liked it more than Cruis'n USA. It found the traffic better placed, the rival drivers more exciting and the stunts off ramps a welcome change, while noting that the courses still have few bends. Next Generation was less impressed, finding little technique and little challenge.

How it was made

The N64 port was developed by Eurocom and published by Nintendo.

“Destined for life in the N64's scrapyard o' dung, Cruis‘n World is dross of the highest order.”

— N64 Magazine, October 1998

“This new version still is not good, but it is much better than its predecessor — not that that's saying much.”

— Next Generation, December 1998

“The frame-rate is really good and the speed simulation is better than a lot of N64 racing games currently on the market.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, December 1998

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

The N64 version has an exclusive Championship mode on circuit tracks that earns points to unlock car upgrades, and supports four players on a split screen.

Before you buy

The US cartridge is priced around the library median and the fake risk is low. PAL copies cost less loose and about the same complete. A complete copy costs a few times the loose price, and sealed copies sell for far more again. The Rumble Pak is optional.
