A poorly reviewed N64 shooter, worth owning as a curiosity rather than for the play.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of John Romero's Daikatana, which began on the PC. Kemco published the N64 game, and it first appeared as a Blockbuster rental exclusive in August 2000, the same month as its North American release. You play a swordsman who travels through time periods with the sword of the title.

GameFan previewed a near-complete N64 build in May 2000 and told readers to drop the Perfect Dark comparisons: it showed promise but would not redefine first-person shooters. Nintendo Power gave the finished game a middling score and said Doom on the Super Nintendo was better. The cartridge is a curiosity first and a shooter second.

“Daikatana at least tries to do something a bit different but at heart it's just a very average first-person shooter.”

— N64 Magazine, May 2000

“Daikatana falls way short of the mark. The levels are drab and unimaginative. The action and gameplay leave plenty to be desired.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, May 2000

Before you buy

The US cartridge is one of the pricier carts in the library, and a complete copy costs several times as much as a loose one. PAL and Japanese copies are separate releases that cost less, loose and complete. The Expansion Pak is optional; Nintendo listed the game among those it enhances. At this price fakes are a risk, so ask for a photo of the board and do not treat a cart that boots as proof.
