About Deadly Moves

Unlike most other fighting games, you can control only one character (Joe) in single-player mode. In two-player mode, you can choose to fight as any of the seven available fighters, and also choose a scenery. The game plays like a standard 2D fighter: you can punch, kick, and jump on you opponents, but the fights are not entirely 2D, since you can also take a few steps vertically.

A one-on-one fighter whose bloody Genesis cover promises more than the game delivers, at an ordinary price.

Deadly Moves is the Genesis version of Kaneko's fighting game, developed by System Vision. It was released in Japan as Power Athlete on 11 December 1992 and in North America in January 1993. The Super NES version is called Power Moves, but the two versions have no difference in gameplay, content or characters.

The Genesis cover shows a character being punched in the face with blood erupting from the impact, though the game itself has no blood or death moves. It is widely believed the Super NES version was renamed to fit Nintendo's no-violence policy.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Despite the blood-spattered cover, the Genesis game contains no blood or death moves of any kind.

GameFan reported that, according to Kaneko, the Genesis version is identical to the Super NES one.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the middle. The Japanese cart (Power Athlete) usually costs a little more than the US one and has a different cartridge shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
