About Dodge 'Em

Dodge 'Em is a 1980 Atari 2600 video game, a driving game based on Sega's Head On (1979). The player controls one car and has to drive counter-clockwise, avoiding computer-controlled cars whose sole aim is to produce a head-on collision. The player's car can travel at two speeds, a 'normal' speed which is the same speed as computer-controlled cars, or if the player presses the controller button, his or her car travels at a 'fast' speed double its normal speed. The computer-controlled cars have only one speed. Players change lanes by pushing the controller in the appropriate direction when their car is near one of the gaps in the roadway.

Carla Meninsky's four-lane maze racer, an early Atari original that is cheap and on Atari 50.

Carla Meninsky programmed Dodge 'Em, and Atari, Inc. published it in 1980. It is a driving maze game, similar to Sega's 1979 arcade game Head On, played on one screen of four concentric roadways. The cartridge holds three versions: one for a single player and two for two players.

Sears released it as Dodger Cars. It is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.

  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Dodge 'Em (CX2637) in its premium tier: dealers paid $18.50 against a suggested retail price of $31.95. The same list groups it among the "cartridge titles introduced in 1980".
  • 1982 Arkie Award. Dodge 'Em took an honorable mention for Best Solitaire Game in the 1982 Arkie Awards as "The very first gobble game to reach the market".

Before you buy

Low risk; no reproductions are documented and loose copies are inexpensive. Check which label you are looking at: Atari's Dodge 'Em with its standard label or text label, or Dodger Cars, the Sears Tele-Games name for the same game, which costs a little more complete.
