About Donkey Kong Junior
Donkey Kong Junior is the direct sequel to Donkey Kong. In this game, Mario plays the antagonist, finally having captured Donkey Kong, and has put the ape in a locked cage. Donkey Kong Junior on Wikipedia
Donkey Kong Jr. is a 1982 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for arcades. It is the sequel to 1981's Donkey Kong, but with the roles reversed compared to its predecessor: Mario is now the villain and Donkey Kong Jr. is trying to save his kidnapped father. A simplified home version of Nintendo's arcade sequel, sold first by Coleco and later by Atari Corp.
Donkey Kong Junior began as Nintendo's 1982 arcade sequel to Donkey Kong, with the roles reversed: Mario is the villain and Donkey Kong Jr. is trying to rescue his kidnapped father. Woodside Design Associates developed the 2600 version, released by Coleco in September 1983 and later issued by Atari Corp.
It is a cheap cartridge either way. Little is documented about how the 2600 version differs from the arcade game.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 6 | September 1983 | Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★ |
“Not only is this not a very good simulation of the original coin-op, but it's also not a good climbing game, period.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

- ColecoVision. Video Games Player liked the ColecoVision version, saying it had better graphics and gameplay than Sega's Space Fury, a ColecoVision conversion released at the same time.
- Coleco Adam. Computer Games called the Coleco Adam version a supergame adaptation and the best conversion of the game.
- BBC Micro. A BBC Micro conversion was made but never released.
Before you buy
Low risk; no reproductions are documented. Check which publisher's label you are looking at: the Coleco original or the later Atari Corp release. The game is the same, but complete Coleco copies tend to cost more. Late Atari Corp cartridges can come in a universal shell with no dust door and a gray label, which is normal and not a sign of a fake.
