The Japan-only N64 original of Animal Crossing, worth owning mainly for its place in the series.

Dōbutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) is a social simulation made by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo, in which the player lives in a village of animal neighbors. It came out in Japan on April 14, 2001. It is the first game in the Animal Crossing series, and Nintendo called it a communication game.

An enhanced GameCube version followed and was the one localized for North America, Australia and Europe between 2002 and 2004, so English-language players know the series from that release. In June 2001 Nintendo gave away a special Controller Pak holding a copy of Ice Climber for use with the game as a sweepstakes prize through magazines such as Famitsu and Nintendo Dream.

What the press said at the time

“Even if you spend an inordinate amount of time in it, you'll never really understand what's going on. Avoid unless you're fluent in Japanese.”

— N64 Magazine, July 2001

Before you buy

This is a Japanese cartridge, so it suits players who read Japanese. Fake risk is Low. The loose price sits above the median for Japan-only releases, and the cart changes hands only about once a month. A complete copy costs several times the loose price, and sealed copies cost more again.
