Larry Miller's day-and-night endurance racer, often called the best racing game on the 2600, and still cheap.

Enduro is a racing game designed by Larry Miller for the Atari 2600 and published by Activision in May 1983. You must pass a set number of cars each day to continue to the next, while the visuals shift from day to night and the weather turns against you.

Miller, who had already made Spider Fighter for Activision, drew on his own drives through California and built the game in about three months of 100-hour weeks. It was the top-selling console game of the month by June 1983, reviewed well, and both contemporary and retrospective reviews have called it the best racing game on the 2600.

How it was made

Designed by Larry Miller, who previously wrote Spider Fighter for Activision. He built it in about three months of 100-hour weeks, drawing on his own experience of driving through California. Released in May 1983, with a PAL release in the third quarter of that year. A ZX Spectrum port followed later.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 1April 1983Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★
Video Games Player Vol. 2 No. 2November 1983A
Arcade Express Vol. 1 No. 23June 19, 19839/10

“For the first time, a home videogame featuring windshield perspective gives the player something to do besides avoid crashes or hug the roadway.”

— Electronic Games, September 1983

“It's one of those rare games that elicited comments from our staff like "Wow—this is incredible!" … ENDURO is far superior to existing race games for the 2600 because it makes you part of the action, not just a detached observer/manipulator.”

— Computer Entertainer, April 1983

“Enduro is the best driving game ever created for Atari VCS, Your engine roars as you accelerate, and your mileage is clocked on an odometer that even registers tenths of a mile.”

— Video Games Player, November 1983

“"Enduro" is the type of cartridge that keeps home arcaders playing for hours on end to see if they can pass "just one more car" to im- prove their final standing in the race.”

— Arcade Express, June 19, 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Video Games Player graded games like a report card, A+ down to C-.

Before you buy

Low risk; Activision carts of this period are not reproduction targets. Two labels are priced: the standard cart and a Blue Label cart. Activision's blue labels are later re-releases of the same game, and here the Blue Label is the cheaper of the two. Check which label a listing shows, and buy whichever suits you if you just want to play.
