About F-22 Interceptor

This simulation puts you in the cockpit of the F-22. You can choose from 3 difficulty settings and fly strike missions in 4 theaters of war (United States, Iraq, Korea and Russia) with increasing difficulty. You can also challenge aces from each theater and design custom missions. To complete a mission, you usually have to destroy both ground and air targets, including several MiG types, helicopters and tanks in addition to ground structures. Use realistic weapons like Sidewinder and Maverick missiles.

An early, ambitious Genesis flight sim that is dirt cheap today and worth owning for its place in the system's history.

F-22 Interceptor is a combat flight simulator created by Ned Lerner and Gene Kusmiak at Lerner Research and published by Electronic Arts. You fly a single aircraft, the F-22, which in 1991 was still a prototype that had only first flown in 1990. Mean Machines previewed it as the first flight simulator on the Megadrive, with over 100 missions, cockpit and external views, film-style cut sequences and a mission-creation option.

Sega Force called it a landmark cart, and Mega later ranked it 30th in its list of the top Mega Drive games of all time. It came out in North America in November 1991, in Europe in December 1991 and in Japan on 12 February 1993.

“A truly superb flight/combat simulation that oozes class. A must for your collection!”

— Mean Machines, November 1991

“F-22 is a good flight simulator by any standard. Fledgling fliers will have a heck of a time trying to master the controls and fiddling with the options.”

— GamePro, January 1992

“This fighter combat simulation is truly superb. Packed with options and features, there are over 100 missions to test even the most elite of pilots - and a mission generator so you can create your own! An absolute must for anyone who's ever wished to fly a fighter bomber!”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“The very first flight sim on the Mega Drive. Speedy graphics and quite a playable game to boot.”

— Mega, January 1993

Before you buy

This is one of the cheapest US carts, far below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs slightly more than the US one, and the Japanese cart usually costs less, though it has a different cartridge shape. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately and usually costs a little more than the plastic-case copy. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
