About FIFA Soccer 96

FIFA Soccer 96 is an entry to the FIFA series of video games, and was developed by Extended Play Productions and published by Electronic Arts. Though it was not the first FIFA game (both FIFA Soccer '95 and FIFA International Soccer had come before it), FIFA 96 is often considered the first truly successful FIFA game, and opened the doors to annual sequels that continue to this day. It was released for the Sega Mega Drive, Sega 32X and Sega Game Gear, with a different version of the game being released on the Sega Saturn.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($8).

Also released on: DOS · PlayStation · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Game Boy · Sega Saturn · Sega Game Gear. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A well-reviewed 16-bit FIFA that is cheap to pick up, especially the European cart.

On the Genesis, FIFA Soccer 96 was developed by Extended Play Productions and published by EA Sports, and came out in North America in November 1995 and in Europe on 10 November 1995. The 16-bit versions use the FIFA 95 engine, and this was the first FIFA to carry real player names.

Next Generation judged that the Genesis version continued the series' habit of improving each year, praising the real leagues and players, and called it the best 16-bit soccer game available. GamePro said the Genesis version had smoother, more realistic graphics than the previous FIFA, with added modes and features.

What the press said at the time

“If you’re into soccer and you're in the market for a Genesis sim, look no further than FIFA Soccer '96.”

— GamePro, December 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Unlike the 3D Saturn, PlayStation, 32X and DOS versions, the Genesis and Super NES editions used the FIFA 95 engine.

  • Sega Saturn. Electronic Gaming Monthly's two sports reviewers each gave the Saturn version 8 out of 10, praising the camera angles and commentary.
  • MS-DOS. Computer Game Review gave the MS-DOS version a Platinum Triad score.

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs far less than the US one, loose or complete. The cartridge keeps some data in a battery inside it, so check that saves hold; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega 32X version

A Europe-only 32X soccer game with 3D graphics that Genesis owners never saw, and the cheaper of the two games Europe got without North America.

The 32X version came out only in Europe, in November 1995, and is the 3D one: the 32X, Saturn, PlayStation and DOS editions use real-time 3D graphics in a "Virtual Stadium", while the Genesis and Super NES versions run on the older FIFA 95 engine. Extended Play Productions and Probe Entertainment developed this cartridge and EA Sports published it.

That makes it a different game from the Genesis edition rather than a touch-up of it.

How it was made

Extended Play Productions and Probe Entertainment developed it for EA Sports.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 56April 199677 %

“Despite everything, FIFA 96 is still the best footy game on die 32X. but this is down to the sad state of the machine rather than anything good in the game.”

— Sega Pro, April 1996

“From what we've seen of the screenshots, this is going to be one heck of a playable game”

— Sega Pro, October 1995

Before you buy

The cartridge needs European (PAL) hardware: a PAL 32X on a PAL Mega Drive. Among the Europe-only games it is the cheaper of the pair, and complete copies cost a good deal more than loose ones. Copies sell infrequently, so be ready to wait for a clean example with its box.
