A competent but unremarkable late Genesis FIFA, and a cheap cart.

FIFA Soccer 97 is EA Sports' fourth FIFA game, sold in Europe as FIFA 97, and the Genesis version came out in North America in November 1996 and in Europe on 22 November 1996. It is the Genesis game, not the PlayStation or PC versions, and this page is about the cartridge.

GamePro reviewed the Genesis and Super NES versions with two different critics.

What the press said at the time

“While the indoor arena in FIFA ’97 Gold Edition goes some way towards this, the basic options and gameplay on offer are no different from anything we’ve seen before.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1996

“FIFA newcomers — buy now. This game sets a new Gold standard. FIFA regulars — rent first to see if the changes warrant a purchase.”

— GamePro, December 1996

Windows · MS-DOS · Game Boy · Super NES · PlayStation · Sega Saturn

  • PlayStation. Next Generation called the PlayStation version the most disappointing EA Sports game in years, citing slow pace and poor control.
  • Windows. The computer version earned a Gold sales award from the VUD in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
  • Sega Saturn. The Saturn version followed in 1997, after the other versions of 1996.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the middle. The European cart usually costs much less than the US one. The cart saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play. EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games, while Sega's later Team Player (MK-1647) runs both in its EXTRA mode.
