About Fighters Destiny

You can choose from more than 10 characters and enter the ring in the ultimate hand-to-hand competition. Rather than using a two-out-of-three format, you must score seven points in order to win a match. Knocking down your opponent, forcing him out of the ring, or throwing him to the ground score anywhere from one to four points. Try to beat all of the other fighters in the Master Challenge, where a victory results in you learning their fighting skills. If you face the Joker, you must beat him or you will lose the skills you have gained. See how many opponents you can beat before giving up seven points in the Survival mode, or try to see how long you can stay in the ring with a fighting cow in the Rodeo mode. Keep your butt off the ground to win at FIGHTERS DESTINY.

Fighters Destiny on Wikipedia

Fighters Destiny, known in Japan as Fighting Cup, is a 1998 video game developed by Genki alongside Opus Corp and Anchor Inc for the Nintendo 64. It closely models the 3D fighting game standards of the time but integrates a unique point scoring system. The game's generic characters and unoriginal presentation have been panned by critics, but reviewers praised its point system and consider it to be one of the best fighting games on the Nintendo 64. It was followed by a sequel, Fighter Destiny 2, released in 2000.

The first N64 fighter many critics took seriously, with a point-scoring system of its own.

Fighters Destiny was developed by Genki with Opus Corp. and Anchor, and it reached North America in January 1998, Europe in March 1998 and Japan in December 1998 as Fighting Cup. It follows the 3D fighting conventions of the time but adds a point scoring system of its own.

Next Generation called it the best fighter on the Nintendo 64. IGN's Peer Schneider praised it as the most original fighting game in years, while Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers were more cautious and called it decent but flawed. Critics pointed out that its characters and presentation were generic, and Computer and Video Games' September 1998 letters page said CVG was the one magazine that had not raved about it. A sequel followed in 2000.

How it was made

Credited to Genki, Opus Corp. and Anchor, with Masahiro Onoguchi as designer. Ocean of America, Infogrames and Imagineer are listed as publishers.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 41May 19984 out of 5 stars

“The N64 is weak in the fighting department, but this game helps out a lot. It's not the Namco or Capcom fighter we're waiting for, but in a pinch, it performs nicely.”

— Game Informer, February 1998

“The N64 will be denied no longer. An inventive, superlative fighter that banishes the memory of Mortal Kombat Trilogy forever. Three cheers for Ocean.”

— N64 Magazine, March 1998

“A solid fighter, and as good as it currently gets on Nintendo's fun machine.”

— GameFan, April 1998

“But despite these few graphical flaws, Fighters Destiny is hands-down the best fighter on Nintendo 64.”

— Next Generation, May 1998

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

Before you buy

The price on this page is for the North American release, which sits below the middle of the library. The PAL release costs about half as much, and the Japanese Fighting Cup release costs less loose but more complete. A complete copy costs a good deal more than a loose cartridge. Fake risk is low.
