The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($111).

Also released on: Amiga CD32 · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Amiga. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A colorful European-only platformer that GameFan raved about, and one of the pricier European carts.

Flink came out in Europe in November 1994 for the Mega Drive, from Psygnosis and published by Sony Electronic Publishing. It is a platformer in which Flink leaps onto enemies' heads, throws objects and mixes magic spells. The Mega Drive and Mega CD versions are identical apart from the CD soundtrack.

GameFan previewed the Genesis game in July 1994 with great enthusiasm, praising its color use, its scaling and its big bosses and the spell mixing.

What the press said at the time

“Flink is a wonder. Not only does it offer graphics that could set a new standard, but it has the gameplay to back them up. The scaling and rotation beat anything the Genesis has to offer and the bosses are amazing. Mixing spells adds to”

— Diehard GameFan, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

All versions were published in Europe by Psygnosis, but only the Mega CD version was released in the United States, so the Genesis cartridge was a European release there.

GameFan's preview said the Genesis game's color and sprites went beyond what the SNES could do.

  • Amiga CD32. Flink is one of the few Amiga CD32 titles never released for the Amiga computer.

Before you buy

Among European-only carts this is one of the priciest, and the risk tier is Medium, so check it carefully and ask for a photo of the board. Make sure a listing is the Mega Drive cartridge and not the Mega CD disc, which is a different version.

The Sega CD version

A colorful, hand-drawn platformer with an inventive spell system, and GameFan loved it more than most.

This is the Sega CD version of Flink, a Psygnosis platformer in which the player casts spells. It came out in Europe in 1994 and in North America in February 1995, where Vic Tokai published it. A Genesis cartridge also exists, but it was a European release; the Mega CD game is the one North America got.

Opinion split. GamePro thought the gameplay, graphics and sound were solid but found the style unbearably cutesy. Next Generation was less warm about the platforming basics but liked the spell-casting and the strong challenge, and judged that the positives outweighed the negatives. Diehard GameFan went furthest and called it the best Sega CD action game its reviewer had played.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 6June 1995***

“Flink comes perilously close to being so average it makes your brain begin to bleed, but the game still comes up with enough inventive touches, details, and sharp, colorful graphics so that, in the final outcome, the positives outweigh the negatives.”

— Next Generation, June 1995

Before you buy

Among North American Sega CD games the US disc is one of the pricier ones, well above the middle. The European disc usually costs more again, loose and especially complete, and it needs a European Mega-CD. Loose copies sell only a few times a year, so ask the seller for photos of the printed side, the data side and the inner ring, and check that the title and catalogue number match the case.
