The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($13).

Also released on: Amiga CD32 · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Sega Game Gear · Amiga · Sega Master System/Mark III. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

“Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck is a fantastic platform game. The levels are challenging and the bosses have some of the best graphics and unique attack patterns I’ve ever seen on the Master System. Brilliant stuff — well done, Core!”

— Sega Master Force, October 1993

“good you re hooked after the first couple of games. Iťs far more appealing than the MD game and if you enjoy cheery platform adventures you should invest in a little stone-age laughter.”

— Sega Pro, December 1993

“Chuck's son brings some stone-age humour to the MS. Excellent platform action from start to finish.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

The Sega Genesis version

A cheerful cartoon platformer from Core Design that is not expensive among US carts.

This is the Genesis version of Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck, a prehistoric platformer from Core Design. It came out in North America and Europe in October 1993, with Virgin Games publishing in North America and Core Design in Europe, and in Japan on 24 June 1994 as Chuck Rock II.

You play Chuck Junior, the six-month-old son of the first game's caveman, who sets off to rescue his kidnapped father. Mean Machines Sega previewed the Mega Drive game when Core Design was starting to publish its own Sega titles, calling it a good-looking version of a game that appeared on all Sega systems.

How it was made

Chris Long programmed the Genesis version, which Core Design developed.

“Chuck Rock's sired his first sequel. Son of Chuck takes a swing at Chuck Rock, but it isn't quite a solid chip off the old block.”

— GamePro, September 1993

“The wacky Stone Age graphics are of the same high standard as the original and althought he gameplay is far from original, it's still great fun to play.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

“Chuck's club-wielding son is the star of this sequel to Core's original crazy caveman caper. Colourful, fun platforming with the same brand of humour and prehistoric sprites as the original, but nothing really new.”

— MegaTech, February 1994

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the middle, so there is no reason to overpay. The European cart usually costs somewhat more than the US one, and the Japanese cart usually costs much more and has a different cartridge shape, so it needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega CD version

The Sega CD edition of Core Design's cartoon caveman platformer adds a new animated intro and soundtrack to an otherwise familiar game.

On the Sega CD, Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck arrived in North America in 1993 and in Europe in January 1994, published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in North America and by Core Design in Europe.

What the disc changes is the presentation. GameFan found a great intro, cool music and a few nicer effects, but said the game itself played just like the cartridge, so it advised anyone who already owned the Genesis game to skip the CD. Mega Machines called the opening cartoon the best it had seen, though it felt the game otherwise differed little from other Mega-CD platformers and reminded it of Core Design's Wonder Dog.

How it was made

Chris Long programmed the Sega CD version, which was built on the same engine as another Core Design game, Wonder Dog. Mark Mason at Tony Garth Animation Ltd animated the opening and ending cutscenes, and Nathan McCree co-composed the soundtrack with Martin Iveson.

What the press said at the time

MegaTech Issue 27March 199486%
Sega Pro Issue 42March 199577%

“Good graphics, good sound, good playability. If you have Mega-CD then Son of Chuck is worth having for the fun factor alone.”

— Mega Action, January 1994

“set out with a club as big as him to bash the baddies in this above average CD platform romp”

— MegaTech, March 1994

“bash the baddies in this above average CD platform romp. The intro is brilliant and so is the in-game animation.”

— MegaTech, April 1994

“The same old platform style is relieved by some polished graphics and difficutt levels. The best thing about this release though is the terrific cartoon intro.”

— Sega Pro, March 1995

Before you buy

The US disc sits about at the middle of the North American Sega CD games, and the European disc usually costs noticeably more, loose and complete. A European disc needs a European Mega-CD. A quick look that the printed disc matches its case is enough.
