About Frogger II: ThreeeDeep!

In Frogger II, you need to guide your frog to safety in three different locations. Starting out underwater, reach the top of the pond while avoiding dangerous alligators and fish (you can ride a turtle for safety!). Once on top of the pond, hop across logs, birds, and even a whale to the life preserver trailing behind a tugboat. In the third location you have to hop across a flock of birds to reach a cloud at the top of the screen. Each frog has a time limit to safely reach one of the homes on each of the three screens. You move on to the next level when a frog has safely reached each of the homes on all screens.

Parker Brothers' sequel to Frogger spreads each level across three linked screens, and it is a more interesting game than its obscurity suggests.

Mark Lesser designed Frogger II: ThreeeDeep! for Parker Brothers, which released it on the 2600 in October 1984 alongside versions for several other home systems. The goal is the familiar one of steering each frog into a berth at the top of the screen, but every level now has three interconnected screens, each with its own berths to fill.

Those three linked screens are the hook: the game asks you to manage a whole level rather than a single crossing. It still sits in the shadow of the first Frogger.

How it was made

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 6September 1984Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½

“Aside from these minor problems, which are almost a given for such an ambitious undertaking on the 2600, Frogger II is flawless. It might even be Parker's best 2600 game yet.”

— Electronic Games, March 1985

“With the large number of objects on the screen, there is quite a bit of blinking of the characters. This version of Frogger II plays as well as the others, though.”

— Computer Entertainer, September 1984

“Parker Brothers has really outdone itself with Frogger II: Threedeep! Not only is it more intriguing and playable than Frogger, it actually looks, plays, and sounds state of the art, all on the lowly 2600.”

— Electronic Games, March 1985

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
