The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($9).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Sega Master System/Mark III · Sega Game Gear · Game Boy · Nintendo Entertainment System. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A boxing game that is its own Master System build rather than a copy of the other consoles' version, and cheap.

George Foreman's KO Boxing came out in Europe in 1992, published by Flying Edge, and in Brazil in 1993 from Tec Toy. SIMS developed the Master System and Game Gear versions, which differ from the other platforms' versions and are based on the Master System version of Heavyweight Champ, released in North America as the 8-bit James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing.

Before you buy

The European cart is priced below the typical European-only cart and the look-alike risk is low. Tec Toy's Brazilian release exists too, but there is no price comparison for it. A US buyer can use the European cart, since the US console plays European carts.

The Sega Genesis version

A plain licensed boxer from Beam Software that Next Generation later remembered fondly, and a cheap cart.

This is the Genesis version of George Foreman's KO Boxing, built by Beam Software and published by Flying Edge, with a Super NES version made by the same developer. It came out in North America in January 1993 and in Europe in April 1993.

Years later, when Next Generation reviewed the sequel Foreman For Real on the Genesis, it called this first game a truly enjoyable one.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 22August 199354%

“A poor attempt that shouid háve been put to sleep the moment the programmers finished.”

— Sega Pro, August 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

In the 16-bit versions a battered-and-bloody portrait of each boxer sits beside the energy meters, and a password system saves career-mode progress instead of battery backup.

Mega said the dire gameplay and abysmal graphics made it a game to avoid.

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs much more. Check which release a listing is before comparing prices.
