About Gods

Who would have thought that a man would be so foolish or so daring as to accept a challenge set down by the Gods? And yet one came forward to claim the right to test his skills and strengths against a city so legendary its name alone struck fear in the hearts of all who heard it spoken.

A handsome, tough platform puzzler that suits the Genesis well and sits a little above the middle among US carts.

This is the Genesis / Mega Drive version of Gods, a game that began on the Amiga and Atari ST. Graftgold is credited as developer, with Mindscape publishing in North America in 1992, PCM Complete in Japan on 26 March 1993 and Accolade in the PAL territories in December 1993. You play Hercules, questing for immortality. The console versions, the Genesis one in particular, run considerably faster than the computer originals, which raises the difficulty.

Mean Machines Sega rated it 89%, praising graphics and sound it said looked like no other Mega Drive title and a mix of puzzling and blasting. Electronic Games found it visually stunning with a great soundtrack, though it thought the metallic look did not suit the Ancient Greek setting.

“Gods isn't supreme, but it is divine. The movement of the main character is a little quirky, and quirky is not what you need in a tight jam.”

— GamePro, January 1993

“The Bitmap Brothers' classic Amiga game hits the Megadrive in real style. The graphics and sound are truly classy, looking nothing like any other Megadrive title. The gameplay is equally good, boasting excellent puzzling action combined with top-notch blasting. Gods is only available as an import though, so be careful when buying.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Really slickly done, with excellent graphics and decent puzzle/shooting/platforming gameplay. … Would have been frustratingly difficult even without the dodgy control system. Torn-out hair may be a side effect of playing this.”

— MegaTech, June 1993

“Really slickly done, with excellent graphics and decent gameplay. … Extremely dodgy controls.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Mean Machines rated the Mega Drive version 89%, saying its graphics and sound looked nothing like any other Mega Drive title, and warned it was an import only.

Before you buy

Among US carts a loose copy sits a little above the middle. The European cart usually costs less than the US one. The Japanese cart usually costs more loose but less complete, and its different cartridge shape needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot.
