A landmark console shooter whose four-player mode still carries it.

GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter from Rare, published by Nintendo, based on the 1995 James Bond film. It reached Japan and North America in August 1997 and the PAL regions that November. It sold more than eight million copies worldwide.

It began as a side-scrolling platformer for the Super Nintendo and grew into a 3D game inspired by Doom and Virtua Cop. Rare borrowed from Virtua Cop its reloading, hit-reaction animations, penalties for shooting innocents and R-button aiming. The team estimated the final N64's power using an SGI Onyx workstation, and the finished hardware turned out faster than that machine.

Electronic Gaming Monthly (issue 103) held it up as a game not to play alone, calling its four-player competition groundbreaking, and in a January 2000 review of another Bond game said GoldenEye had turned out better than anyone expected despite arriving late.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 34October 19975 out of 5 stars

“Goldeneye is a surprising killer app, if only for the smashing multiplayer options. The excellent single-player game backing it up makes it well worth buying indeed.”

— Next Generation, October 1997

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

Before you buy

Med-tier fake risk: ask for a photo of the board, and remember that a cart that boots proves nothing. The US release sits above the library median on price. A Player's Choice copy sells for about the same loose as the original, but a Not for Resale demo cart is far dearer, and with no published way to spot a fake one it should be bought graded or with a board photo. PAL copies cost much less loose and about the same complete; Japanese copies cost less than US ones. The Rumble Pak is optional. Sealed copies cost well above the complete price.
