About Great Ice Hockey
Welcome to the Big Leagues. Here's a rough and tumble hockey game that takes a steady hand and quick reflexes. Because your mean opponents mean business. Teams line up in full defense. Tackle one another. Scramble for the puck. Drive relentlessly for a goal. Victory for your team depends on you. So you need sharp techniques. Quickness. Power. And smooth stick-shifting ability. Show you have the right touch, hit the puck straight into the goal. But just relax your guard, and see why they call the game of hockey "wrestling on ice."

A trackball-driven hockey game that is only worth buying if you also have the Sports Pad it was built around.
Great Ice Hockey is an ice hockey game from Sega, released in North America in December 1986 as part of its Great line of sports games. It requires the Sega Sports Pad trackball, and you take the control pads out of the console to use it.
Computer Entertainer's early look at the Sports Pad titles noted that only Great Ice Hockey and Great Football needed the trackball, while the other Great sports games ran on the normal controller. Two-player games therefore need two Sports Pads, which Computer Entertainer called an expensive proposition at the time.
Before you buy
Check that you have, or are buying, the Sports Pad: the game requires it and the control pads must be removed. The US cart is on the cheap side among US carts, but the Japanese cart is listed for far more than the US one in both conditions, and the Japanese release in 1987 was only a prize in Beep! magazine. Japanese cartridges are also a different, smaller shape and do not fit a Western console without an adapter. For an expensive Japanese copy, ask for a photo of the board.
