A gentle, open-ended farming game that was an oddity among N64 role-playing games, and one of the priciest carts in the library.
Harvest Moon 64 is a farm simulation developed by Victor Interactive Software, the third game in the series after Harvest Moon GB. Pack-In-Soft released it in Japan in February 1999 and Natsume brought it to North America that December. You grow crops, raise livestock and court one of five potential wives, with new tools you can power up, new animals and vegetables, dog and horse racing and a part-time job system.
Period coverage was warm. GameFan's November 1999 issue called it one of the most enjoyable games to reach the N64, and EGM noted that the system had few role-playing games and that this was as far from a normal one as you could get. Its worst feature, in EGM's view, was the monotonous farming chores. IGN's reviewer said he forgave poor audio and visuals because he found himself playing for hours.
How it was made

“Harvest Moon is one of those twilight titles that will go tragically unnoticed to most RPG fans out there. That’s a shame because HM64 has that rare charm and warmth missing from a lot of games.”
“It doesn't get much better than this. Don't miss out on one of the sweetest games of the year.”
“The play is a tad slow, but it really needs to be for it to be accurate. While strange graphical flickers occur, the look is also quite pleasant and appropriate for this type of game.”
“For fans of the first game, as well as the Game Boy incarnation, Harvest Moon 64 will be a must buy.”

Before you buy
Fake risk is medium for this cartridge, so ask the seller for a photo of the board; a cart that boots proves nothing. The game saves to a battery inside the cart, and a replaced battery is a normal repair rather than a sign of a fake. The North American cartridge sits among the dearest in the library, and a complete copy is worth several times the loose price. The Japanese release is a separate cartridge that costs a small fraction as much, but the game is in Japanese, so most English-language players will want the North American copy.
