About Highlander: The Last of the MacLeods
Quentin McCloud must rescue clan members during a journey across his world in this game for the Jaguar CD. Quentin is portrayed in 3D, as are his enemies, but most of his world is in 2D (much like Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil). Unfortunately, the 3D polygon construction of the characters is hideous, though the backgrounds and cut scenes are well done. The first-person control scheme has promise, but suffers from multiple problems. If Quentin is attacked from behind, by the time he pivots, he's usually dead. Highlander is a mediocre game deserving of consideration from Highlander fans but, even considering the scarcity of Jaguar CD titles, probably best left alone by others.

Highlander: The Last of the MacLeods is an action-adventure video game developed by Lore Design Limited and published by Atari Corporation exclusively for the Atari Jaguar CD first in North America on 30 October 1995 and later in Europe on November of the same year. The first installment in a planned trilogy based upon Gaumont Television and Bohbot Entertainment's Highlander: The Animated Series, which was both a loose spin-off and sequel of the 1986 film of the same name, players assume the role of Quentin MacLeod in an effort to save the Dundee clan from slavers of the evil immortal Kortan. Its gameplay mainly consists of action and exploration with a main eight-button configuration.

The only region-exclusive game in the entire Jaguar library — Europe only, and scarcer in North America than its print run suggests.
Based on the animated series rather than the films: an action-adventure with FMV sequences and fixed-camera third-person play in the Alone in the Dark lineage. Every other Jaguar title released in North America; this one didn't — reportedly for licensing reasons — which makes it the most important cataloguing note in the CD library and a likely source of compatibility questions from NA buyers.

How the Atari Jaguar version differs
Announced at SCES '94 and WCES '95 as one of the first Jaguar CD titles. Critics compared its play style to Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil.
A PC port by Lore Design was announced under Atari Interactive and killed when that division closed following the JT Storage merger. In 2004 the Jaguar Sector II website released beta builds of both that PC port and the Jaguar CD version on a compilation, Jaguar Extremist Pack #3.

- Windows. A PC conversion was in development at Lore Design, to be published by Atari's newly formed Atari Interactive division. The division closed when Atari merged with JT Storage in 1996 and the port died with it. A beta build surfaced in 2004 on the Jaguar Sector II compilation Jaguar Extremist Pack #3.
Worth knowing
- It was going to be a fighting game. Development began in May 1994 on a Highlander fighter in the visual style of Rise of the Robots. Technical difficulties, plus a team that had simply had enough of fighting games, killed that version — and the project was retooled into an adventure. Atari came to the licence in the first place because enough people inside the company were fans of the films.
- Atari funded a motion-capture studio to make it. The scope grew far enough that Atari paid to have a motion-capture studio built at Lore Design's headquarters — six cameras, retro-reflective markers, and a custom Windows toolchain to turn the point clouds into an animation format Lore designed themselves. On a Jaguar CD game. It also grew from one disc into a planned three-disc trilogy, of which only this first part ever shipped.
- The cartoon's actual cast came with it. Gaumont Television, Nelvana and Bohbot Entertainment supplied scripts, concept art, storyboards and original sound material, and every original voice actor from Highlander: The Animated Series returned to reprise their role. The game intercuts real clips from the series. Lore Design went into receivership in 1997 after a dispute with Atari, and the animated series' trademark renewal was itself cancelled in 2009.

Sold as a PAL-region European release — before making any "works on my system" claim to a NA buyer, verify Jaguar CD region behavior for yourself; it is not well documented, and the credits on this title are similarly murky. Test-played or discounted.

Buying a Jaguar CD title
Jaguar CDs are the most fragile discs of their generation, and the reason is structural rather than bad luck: Atari built a proprietary format on the audio-CD spec instead of standard CD-ROM. Capacity rose to roughly 790MB, but error correction fell.
- Light scratches that a PlayStation disc shrugs off can make a Jaguar CD unreadable. Treat "light scratches, plays fine" with more scepticism here than on any other platform.
- Only buy discs that have been test-played on real hardware — emulator testing proves nothing about a marginal disc.
- Confirm the Memory Track cartridge is included or already owned: most Jaguar CD titles cannot save without it, and it is routinely missing from used listings.
- Check the jewel case hinges and tray teeth. Replacement cases are common and are not a fault, but a swapped case often travels with swapped inserts.
