Konami's odd action role-playing hybrid, an unusual N64 cartridge that rewards players who try it.

Hybrid Heaven is an action role-playing game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka and published by Konami, released in Japan in August 1999 and in North America later that month. Computer and Video Games previewed it in 1998 as a huge sci-fi adventure that plays like a cross between Resident Evil and an RPG: aliens have kidnapped the US president and agent John Slader's team has to save him, with menu-driven combat.

It is one of the few N64 games to support a widescreen mode. N64 Magazine gave it multi-page previews and devoted two covers to it, and GameFan's June 1999 reviewer, who did not expect much, found clean graphics (but a choppy frame rate with the Expansion Pak), and puzzle-oriented play.

“With gameplay that's a mix of TR and WWF, epic story, good music, and near-forgivable flaws along the lines of T2, HH is a must-play for N64 owners. But I'd advise renting before buying”

— GameFan, June 1999

“While it's nowhere near the quality of the many Japanese titles that have appeared on PlayStation over the past years, Konami's first RPG outing on N64 is a successful one.”

— Next Generation, June 1999

“Frustrating and compelling, Hybrid Heaven is by turns flawed and inspired, but ultimately great fun.”

— N64 Magazine, October 1999

Worth knowing

  • 64DD plans. GameFan reported in September 1997 that Konami's action RPG Hybrid Heaven would be among the first 64DD games with modem play.

Before you buy

The US cartridge is priced above the middle of the library, and a complete copy costs several times the loose price; sealed copies command a large premium. PAL and Japanese copies cost less than US ones. The Expansion Pak and Rumble Pak are both optional. The fake risk is low.
