A soccer game that period reviewers ranked above FIFA Soccer 64, and still one of the better third-party sports carts of its year.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of Konami's International Superstar Soccer, made by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka. Japan got it first, in December 1996, as Jikkyō J.League Perfect Striker, and UK magazines were already covering that import in early 1997 as the preview of the game that became ISS 64. PAL territories followed in mid-1997 and North America in August 1997.

Reviewers loved it. GameSpot praised the analog stick controls, most critics ranked it above FIFA Soccer 64, and Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewer called it the best soccer game on the market. GamePro, one of the few critics with complaints, disliked the music and the fictional players but called it an arcade-style game that ranks high on fun. Next Generation, in February 1998, still described it as Konami's killer app for the N64.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 30June 19974 out of 5 stars
Next Generation Issue 32August 19975 out of 5 stars

“A fantastic N64 debut for football, and April's Europeanization should spell complete satisfaction. Superb.”

— N64 Magazine, April 1997

“No worries on that front, though, as Perfect Striker delivers fluid graphics and great sound effects with crisp play-by-play announcing.”

— GamePro, May 1997

“J-League Perfect Striker goes farther than most titles in presenting a fantastic look and feel. Just make sure you have a few friends around to play it, otherwise you’ll tire from 10-3 wins real quick.”

— Next Generation, June 1997

“International Superstar Soccer is easily the best Nintendo 64 sports game, and it really puts FIFA 64 in its rightful place (the bottom).”

— Next Generation, August 1997

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

Before you buy

A loose US copy sits about at the library median and the fake risk is low. PAL copies cost far less, loose and complete, so a European cart is a cheap way in if you can use it. Complete US copies cost a few times the loose price.
