A well-regarded Factor 5 football game and the Mega Drive's late answer to FIFA, at a middling price.

International Superstar Soccer Deluxe came to the Mega Drive in Europe on 5 December 1996, published by Konami. Factor 5 developed this version, following Konami's Super NES release of 1995. Japan knew the series as Jikkyou World Soccer 2: Fighting Eleven.

The Mega Drive version drew generally positive reviews. France's Joypad praised its speed, animation and tactical depth, and judged it better than the FIFA games of the day. Germany's NeXt Level admired how Factor 5 pulled strong animation and speech samples out of the ageing hardware and called it the best Mega Drive football game for anyone waiting for FIFA 97, though it missed club teams and leagues.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Computer and Video Games praised the Mega Drive version's options and arcade-style play but found graphics and sound comparatively unimpressive, given the many football games on the system.

French magazine Joypad gave the Mega Drive version 92%, rating it above contemporary FIFA titles.

Hobby Consolas gave it 91% but criticized the lack of club teams and league competitions.

It is a European Mega Drive release only, so the European cart is the one to buy. Among European-only carts it sits about at the middle. Sega Retro lists it as supporting Sega's Team Player multitap and using the six-button pad.
