Atari's conversion of Sun Electronics' boxing-kangaroo platformer, common and cheap.
Kangaroo is a 1982 Sun Electronics arcade platformer that Atari released in North America. You play a mother kangaroo in boxing gloves trying to rescue her joey from fruit-throwing monkeys. It is one of the first arcade games in the style of Donkey Kong without being a direct clone, and you jump by pushing up on the joystick rather than pressing a button.
Atari released the Atari 2600 version in July 1983, with a PAL release late that year. GCC developed it, with Kevin Osborn credited as designer.
How it was made
Developed by GCC for Atari, with Kevin Osborn credited as designer. Released in North America in July 1983 and in PAL regions in the fourth quarter of 1983.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 5 | August 1983 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
| Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 12 | October 1983 | 3½ joysticks |
“In the hands of a good designer, the Atari 2600 is capable of a lot more than anyone thought possible, and KANGAROO is yet another of the really good aracade translations that have been coming out of Atari this year.”
“But even though the graphics and the sound are generally horrible, the gameplay is many times better than in the arcades.”
“Also in store are 2600 editions of such well-received 5200 titles as Kangaroo. The graphics for this one are spare but decent, and the play action may actually be a little more fluid than on the 5200 cart.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

How the Atari 2600 version differs
Reviewing the 2600 cartridge, Electronic Fun's Charles Ardai called its graphics and sound horrible but said it played better than the arcade game.

- Atari 8-bit. Jim Leiterman of Atari Research converted the 5200 cartridge to the Atari 8-bit computers in a day; it was sold without credit through the Atari Program Exchange.
Before you buy
Low risk; a common Atari cart and not a reproduction target. Loose copies are inexpensive, and boxed copies cost a few times as much. Check box condition before paying for a complete one.
