The launch fighter, the Dreamcast tie-in, and a genuinely good game — the cheapest good thing on the platform.
R-2 was a North American launch title and remains one of the least expensive English cartridges on the system, which makes it wildly underpriced for what it is: a compact King of Fighters with the platform's excellent stick response and a proper single-player run.
It carried the platform's headline gimmick. SNK's own 1999 FAQ describes it: using the Dreamcast link, you could build a custom character in R-2 and carry it over to the Dreamcast King of Fighters, trading items between the two. Cross-device character transfer in 1999 was genuinely ahead of its time, and almost nobody had the hardware to see it.
It is on NEOGEO POCKET COLOR SELECTION Vol. 1 for the Nintendo Switch.
Before you buy
Cheap enough that faking it rarely pays. Note that its monochrome predecessor, King of Fighters R-1, is a different game on a different machine and was never released outside Japan; the two get conflated in listings.
