A build-your-own-car kart racer that critics found bland, and a cheap, forgettable cart apart from its racer builder.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of Lego Racers, a kart racer with Lego minifigure drivers set in the Legoland universe and made by High Voltage Software for Lego Media. It reached North America in October 1999, with a PAL release a couple of weeks later. The single-player mode is a tournament created by a fictional champion called Rocket Racer, and you build the cars you race.

Opinion on the N64 version was mixed. One of EGM's reviewers in January 2000 found the tracks short and unimaginative and called it a cheap Mario Kart clone, saving praise only for the racer builder, while another loved building a racer and racing a friend. Next Generation's reviewer called the frame rate nauseatingly slow.

“Lego Racers is simple, pure racing fun, with 25 well-designed tracks and tight control.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 2000

“LEGO Racers is actually a nice little surprise that boasts a mighty challenge within. its block-mount-block world. Its gameplay is not as balanced as it should be”

— Game Informer, January 2000

Before you buy

This cartridge is cheap, sitting below the median for the library, and the fake risk is low. Budget for a Controller Pak: the game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge. The PAL release is a separate cartridge that costs somewhat less, loose and complete. A complete copy is worth several times the loose price.
