About Lord Monarch: Tokoton Sentou Densetsu

Lord Monarch is a 1991 strategy game for the NEC PC-98 by Falcom and the seventh main title in their Dragon Slayer series. Sega Falcom remade it for the Sega Mega Drive in 1994, this time called Lord Monarch: Tokoton Sentou Densetsu. This version was not released outside Japan. The object is to destroy all the camps and peasants of all the player's rival kingdoms under a strict time limit. Alliances can be formed near the beginning of the game to help the player. However, the alliance is only effective until the enemy alliance is defeated. Then the former allies declare war on each other. Victory through a cunning alliance is impossible because game rules dictate that there can only be one winner at the end of the game; that is why the two former allies need to go to war in order to claim the victory. Peasants have to do engineering tasks as well as military tasks. For example, bridges, monster-filled caves, and fences can be created or destroyed for the purposes of strategy. Peasants may also merge their units to become soldiers and eventually knights when there are enough units in that army.

A real-time strategy war game from Falcom's Dragon Slayer line, and a pricey Japan-only cart worth checking.

Lord Monarch is a real-time strategy war game, part of Falcom's Dragon Slayer series, that first appeared on the NEC PC-9801 in 1991 and reached the Super Famicom in 1992. Sega published the Mega Drive version in Japan on 24 June 1994, and it came out only in Japan. Sega Retro lists it as supporting the Sega Mouse and as using the six-button pad.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Mega Drive version limits diplomacy: the simple alliance system cannot be used once a match is five minutes in.

Unlike the Super Famicom version, the Mega Drive game does not pause so that the player can take unlimited time choosing a strategically advantageous ally.

Also on other platforms

PC-9801 · FM Towns · Super NES · Windows · PlayStation · Super Famicom

  • Super Famicom. The Super Famicom version adds themes such as futuristic robots, fast food and Three Kingdoms, pauses automatically until Start is pressed, and supports the Super Famicom mouse.
  • Super Famicom. A later Super Famicom version, BS Lord Monarch, was broadcast exclusively in Japan through Satellaview.

Before you buy

Among Japan-only carts this is on the dear side, above the middle, and it is a valuable enough cart to check carefully. Ask for a photo of the board. A Japanese Mega Drive cart has a notch on the left and ridged edges, and its cartridge is a different shape from a Western Genesis cart and fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in the slot. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake.
