A Mario-themed photo-editing tool on a cartridge with SmartMedia slots, a true oddity and one of the dearest Japanese carts on the system.

Mario no Photopi is an image-editing program rather than a game. Players import digital-camera photos and decorate them with Mario-themed clip art, borders and fonts to make slideshows, postcards and printable images. The cartridge has two SmartMedia card slots, a design unique on the Nintendo 64, and carries the model number NUS-023.

Datt Japan, Fuji Photo Film, Nintendo and Tokyo Electron developed it, Tokyo Electron Device published it, and Hagiwara Syscom distributed it. It was released only in Japan in December 1998. It was marketed as an alternative to an expensive personal computer, built around the N64 and its planned 64DD drive, and Vice later compared it to Photoshop and Mario Paint.

Before you buy

Fake risk is medium and loose copies sit near the top of the library's price range for Japan-only games, so ask for a photo of the board; a cart that boots proves nothing. Because this is a nonstandard cartridge, check the listing photos for the two SmartMedia slots. A complete copy costs only moderately more than a loose one. This is the Japanese cartridge, with no other version to choose between.
