A mecha-themed side-scrolling brawler with fighting-game touches, and one of the pricier US carts.

Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter is a hybrid of side-scrolling beat 'em up and fighting game, made by Almanic Corporation together with ALU and Team "Saga". It is based on Go Nagai's Mazin Saga manga: you play Koji Kabuto, who wears the Mazinger Z armor to fight the Bio Beasts led by God Kaiser Hell. Much of the team had worked on E.V.O.: Search for Eden at Almanic.

Sega published it in Japan on 26 February 1993 as Mazin Saga and in Europe in July 1993, where it was called Mazin Wars. In North America Vic Tokai published it in October 1993.

“As a side-scrolling hack-and-slash. Mazin Saga is a winner with very solid game play and killer music! One problem— the game is a little short.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, December 1993

“Intriguing graphics and gigantic bosses draw you into this cyborg-fighting game, but weak sounds and controls will push you back out.”

— GamePro, January 1994

“It could be better looking, but it plays well. … Incredible bosses. … Apart from the bosses it offers few surprises.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

“Dash along a series of levels, hacking apart anything and everything you encounter. You're presented with challenge after challenge, including some absolutely massive bosses. Could be better-looking, but plays well.”

— MegaTech, February 1994

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Genesis version.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the pricier ones, so the Med tier on the page is worth taking seriously: ask for a photo of the board, and compare it with the board listed on this page. The European loose cart usually costs a bit more than the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs much less. The Japanese loose cart usually costs a lot more than the US one, while a complete Japanese copy costs about the same; the Japanese cartridge has a different shape and needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot.
