About Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World

The Sequel to the successful Might and Magic I, it boasted better graphics, a larger world, but still pretty much the same game engine and presentation. Embark on a glorious journey then save the world of CRON and yourself. A balanced party is a necessity in this game. There are several locations and items that are restricted to certain genders, alignments, or races. A party made up of Good Human Males won't get you very far. Time plays a large role in this game. Time travel is a part of it, but on a more basic level, you will find that characters age as the game goes on. If you wait too long, your characters' statistics will change to reflect their aging.

A competent dungeon crawler converted from a computer classic, with a battery save to check.

Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World came to the Genesis from New World Computing's 1988 computer role-playing game, published by Electronic Arts in July 1991 in both North America and Europe.

Dragon reviewed the Genesis version in 1991 as easy to play and handsome, but found the heavy emphasis on combat made it workmanlike. Video Games and Computer Entertainment saw it as a relic among role-playing games, polished only a little for the console.

What the press said at the time

Mean Machines Sega Issue 3December 199281%

“An extremely good menu/text-driven RPG which should keep purists scratching their craniums for months.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“This one’s past its prime, to be honest. Actually, it’s doubtful if it ever had a prime to be past”

— Mega, July 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Dragon gave the Genesis version 5 out of 5 stars, a star more than it gave the original game.

Computer Gaming World's 1991 review of the Genesis version found it easy to play with excellent graphics, but called the overemphasis on combat workmanlike and airless.

  • Super NES. The Super NES received two separate ports built by two different teams, one exclusive to Japan and a different one exclusive to Europe.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the middle. The European cart usually costs noticeably more than the US one when loose, and somewhat more when complete. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake.
