Treasure's inventive grab-and-shake platformer is short and easy but full of personality, and among the pricier carts in the library.

Mischief Makers is a side-scrolling platformer developed by Treasure, published by Enix in Japan and by Nintendo elsewhere, and the first 2D side-scroller on the N64. You play Marina Liteyears, a robot maid sent to rescue her creator, Professor Theo, from the emperor of Planet Clancer, by grabbing, shaking and throwing objects across five worlds and 52 levels. Japan got it in June 1997, North America in October 1997 and PAL regions in December 1997.

GameFan (September 1997) was enthusiastic, praising the deep gameplay, the soundtrack and three boss fights it counted among the best ever, and commended Nintendo, Enix and Treasure for a quick localization. Many reviewers on release were more mixed, enjoying its inventiveness, personality and bosses but criticizing its short length and low difficulty. GamesRadar later called it possibly the most underrated N64 game.

“The ‘grab item’ mechanic works well, and the trademark Treasure bosses are as impressive and as innovative as ever. One thing’s for sure; Mischief Makers is in a class of its own on the N64.”

— GameFan, September 1997

“This game, and its graphics, grow on you over time. The sheer variety of stuff in Mischief Makers keeps the graphics fresh.”

— Nintendo Power, October 1997

“Yes, it’s 2D (with 3D bits), but it's a hell of a lot of fun, there's a lot to do for your money, and you'll forever be refining your shaking/throwing/jumping techniques. Total madness.”

— N64 Magazine, November 1997

Nintendo Power was Nintendo of America's own magazine, so its reviews are the console maker's view of its platform. Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

Before you buy

Fake risk is medium, so ask for a photo of the board before paying a premium price; a cart that boots proves nothing. The US cartridge sits among the pricier carts in the library, and a complete copy costs about three times the loose price. PAL copies cost much less than the US cart, and Japanese copies cost less too.
