A solid EA Sports baseball game with a season mode that saves to a battery, at a below-average price.
The Genesis version of MLBPA Baseball was developed by High Score Productions and published by EA Sports in North America in 1994. You can play a single game, a full season built on the 1994 schedule, the playoffs and a World Series, and the Genesis cartridge keeps season progress on a battery rather than a password.
GameFan, writing about it in 1994, noted that the Genesis game stays in its pseudo-3D view longer than the Super NES one and is modeled after Baseball Stars 2 on the Neo Geo.
What the press said at the time
“If you're in the market for an uncomplicated yet challenging baseball cart that's fun for all ages, look no further than MLBPA Baseball!”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
The full-season mode records wins and losses by battery backup on the Genesis, while the Super NES version uses a password.
Also on other platforms
Super NES · Game Gear
- Super NES. Gamefan called it the best SNES baseball game to date, but noted it has only one stadium and no battery for tracking season statistics.
- Super NES. Famicom Tsushin scored the Super Famicom version 20 out of 40; the unlicensed Japanese version, Fighting Baseball, went viral in 2017 for its programmer-created rosters.
Before you buy
Among US carts the loose cart sits below the middle. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play; note that EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games.
