A Japan-only shogi game with an unusual past: modem play, and a flaw that lets owners run homebrew software.
Morita Shogi 64 is a shogi game developed and published by SETA, released in Japan on April 3, 1998. It is the indirect sequel to Saikyō Habu Shōgi, a launch game for the system. It was built for online play against other players across Japan, but those servers are now defunct.
A published security flaw, catalogued as CVE-2020-13109, allows the game to be exploited to run homebrew software on the console.
Worth knowing
- A homebrew entry point. The game is listed in the National Vulnerability Database as CVE-2020-13109, a flaw that lets owners run their own homebrew code.
Before you buy
This is the Japanese cartridge, and the game came out only in Japan. Loose copies sit well above the middle of the Japan-only group and above the 1998 median, and they sell about once a month. A complete copy costs noticeably more than a loose cartridge. It is a Japanese-language shogi game, so it suits players who read the language. Fake risk is low.
