About Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon

The story follows Goemon's struggles to prevent the Peach Mountain Shoguns gang from turning Japan into a Westernized fine arts theater. The plot calls for three cinematic musical features and battles between giant robots; like other Ganbare Goemon games, it is peppered with surrealist humor and anachronisms. The protagonist of Mystical Ninja is Goemon, a hot-blooded, kiseru-wielding ninja with blue, bushy hair based loosely on the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon. The lord of Oedo asks him to find those who maimed Oedo Castle. Goemon lives in Oedo Town and is friends with Ebisumaru, a strange, gluttonous fat man who wears a blue bandana. Ebisumaru is defined as lazy and perverted. Their kunai-throwing friend Sasuke is a mechanical ninja (made by the Wise Man of Iga) who enjoys hot baths and Japanese tea. Rounding out the heroes is Yae, a fierce sword-wielding kunoichi, who happens upon Goemon's band in Zazen Town. The villains of the game hail from the organization Peach Mountain Shoguns and include a gang of four "weirdos" led by Spring Breeze Dancin' (Danshin Harukaze) and Kitty Lily (Margaret Ranko). They intend to transform Japan into a stage for their talents.

Konami's sprawling, strange 3D Goemon adventure, charming enough to justify its place among the most expensive carts in the library.

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is a 3D action-adventure from Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka. It reached Japan in August 1997, then North America and Europe in April 1998. It was the second Ganbare Goemon game released in North America and Europe, following The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, and the story has Goemon trying to stop the Peach Mountain Shoguns gang from turning Japan into a Westernized fine arts theater, with three cinematic musical features along the way.

Computer and Video Games previewed it in March 1998 as Goemon in a 3D, 128 meg, Mario-style adventure. Edge called the Japanese version the biggest third-party N64 game yet when it reviewed the import in October 1997, and later described the PAL version as a vast and sprawling experience. GameSpot said it borrowed heavily from Super Mario 64 but had more varied gameplay and, because it used the most memory of any N64 cartridge to date, a wider variety of textures.

How it was made

Developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka and published by Konami. Keita Kawaminami and Madoka Yamauchi are credited as designers and Etsunobu Ebisu as programmer.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 45September 19983 out of 5 stars

“Mystical Ninja 64 merely takes that formula and, like Mario 64, updates the 2D side-scrolling action with 3D free-roaming adventure. Has it worked? In my opinion, YES!”

— GameFan, April 1998

“Overall, though, this is just the ticket for N64 owners awaiting a bridge between Mario 64 and its sequel, and a perfect example of how well the machine can be used by third-party developers”

— N64 Magazine, April 1998

“if only Konami had taken the time to polish it (and make it longer), Mystical Ninja could have been the best N64 action/RPG by more than just default.”

— Next Generation, September 1998

“I believe Goemon (touted Mystical Ninja stateside) will finally break into the mainstream this time out, due to some spectacular 3D adventure-filled game play, a truly memorable soundtrack”

— GameFan, October 1997

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

Before you buy

Fake risk is medium for this cartridge, so ask the seller for a photo of the board; a cart that boots proves nothing. The North American cartridge is one of the dearest in the library, and a complete copy is worth several times the loose price. PAL and Japanese releases are separate and much cheaper, with the Japanese cartridge costing a small fraction as much. Budget for a Controller Pak: the game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge.
