About NBA Hangtime
Hangtime was the third basketball game by the original development team behind the NBA Jam series. The title was changed due to the NBA Jam name being acquired by Acclaim Entertainment, the publisher of the games for the home market. Acclaim's NBA Jam Extreme was released the same year as Hangtime. Features introduced in Hangtime included character creation, alley oops and double dunks. A software update known as NBA Maximum Hangtime was released for the arcades later in the life cycle.

We haven’t priced or authenticated the versions without a section on this page yet.
Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Nintendo 64 version
A raucous two-on-two arcade port that GamePro loved and Next Generation found dated.
NBA Hangtime is a basketball game from Midway, the third from the team behind NBA Jam, renamed because Acclaim had acquired the NBA Jam title. The N64 cart reached North America in January 1997 and the PAL regions in September 1997.
GamePro (February 1997) called it a stellar arcade port, light on realism and heavy on fun, with five player choices per team and moves like leaning shots, double dunks and alley-oops. Next Generation (May 1997) was cooler: it said the original NBA Jam still played better and that Hangtime felt like dated gameplay. IGN praised the create-a-player mode.
What the press said at the time
| Next Generation Issue 29 | May 1997 | 2 out of 5 stars |
“Jam-style hoops is nothing new, but Hangtime does it with enough flash and freshness to keep you happily dunkin" like a fool. The multiplayer action's particularly awesome.”
“You could certainly do worse things with your Nintendo 64 than enjoy a four-player game of NBA Hangtime (try Cruis'n USA for one), but remember that you could buy a Super NES and a copy of the original NBA Jam (which is still better than Hangtime) for nearly the same price as this cart.”
“If you’re into sports sims, this cart looks like an essential purchase. With cool graphics, excellent playability and a good sense of humour running throughout, we reckon Hang Time is gonna’ be huge!”
Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."
How the Nintendo 64 version differs
The N64 version, like the other home versions, uses rosters accurate to the 1996-97 NBA season, where the original arcade game used 1995-96 rosters.

Before you buy
Low fake risk. The US cart sits above the library median on price, and PAL copies cost somewhat less, loose and complete. The game saves to a Controller Pak, so budget for one. A complete copy costs more than twice the loose price.

The Sega Genesis version
A competent late-era Genesis take on two-on-two arcade basketball, priced below the middle among US carts.
This is the Genesis version of NBA Hangtime, which Funcom developed for the 16-bit consoles. It was published by Midway and THQ and came out in North America on 5 November 1996 and in Europe on 21 February 1997. The arcade game was the third basketball game from the team behind NBA Jam and took a new name because Acclaim owned the NBA Jam title for home versions.
GamePro reviewed the Genesis cart in its February 1997 issue and said it would bring back the appeal of NBA Jam, with five-man rosters chosen from a large selection of NBA players (a few superstars, Shaq among them, are missing) and the usual turbo, dunk, pass, shove and steal moves.
How the Sega Genesis version differs
On home versions the NBA trivia quiz at the end of each game gives players more attribute points for their created players, in place of the arcade's prize drawing.
GamePro found the Genesis game's benches loaded with top players, minus a few superstars like Shaq, with five-man rosters to choose from.

Before you buy
Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs more than the US one when loose, while complete copies cost about the same. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy, so check which one a listing is. Sega Retro lists it as working with Sega's Team Player multitap for more than two players. A complete US copy means the case or box, cartridge and manual.
