About NBA Live 95

The first of the NBA Live video games series. The cover featured an action shot of the 1994 NBA Finals. It introduced many elements of that would become standard in the series, including the isometric on-court perspective, the "T-meter" for shooting free throws and the turbo button used to give players a temporary burst of speed. The game was re-released with NBA Live 06 as part of the EA Retro Series.

What it needs to play

  • Some modesSave battery (inside the cartridge) — saves to memory kept alive by a battery inside the cartridge; if that battery has died, saves are lost (MAME cartridge records).

How often it sells

  • Loose: about once a week
  • Complete: about 2 times a week
  • Sealed: about once a year

Prices marked “few sales” rest on about one recorded sale a year, so treat them as a rough guide: the next copy could sell well above or below. Expect to wait for one to come up.

A well-regarded EA basketball game that is now a cheap pickup.

On the Genesis, NBA Live 95 was published by EA Sports and credited to Hitmen Productions. It came out in North America in 1994 and in Europe on 28 October 1994. Roster management is limited, and only the players in the starting lineup can be traded. GamePro rated the Genesis version positively, though it found the cooperative multiplayer tended to be confusing.

What the press said at the time

“overall, like | like to say, NBA Live 95 was ‘all good’.”

— Game Players, December 1994

“Once again, the Genesis version of another Electronic Arts sports game just doesn’t quite measure up to the SNES version, even though this is a very playable game in its own right.”

— Game Players, April 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version used the up-to-date 1994-95 rosters, minus most of the rookie class, while the SNES version had 1993-94 rosters. Only starting-lineup players could be traded, and there was no Create-a-Player or free agent pool.

GamePro rated the Genesis version positively but found the cooperative multiplayer tends to be confusing.

Also on other platforms

MS-DOS · Super NES

  • Super NES. Next Generation rated the Super NES version five stars out of five, and Game Players gave it a best sports game award in its Super NES division.
  • MS-DOS. The PC release had rosters accurate as of the 1994-95 trade deadline and included the entire rookie class of 1994.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European loose cart usually costs a little less than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs more. The cartridge keeps some data in a battery inside it, so check that saves hold; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with XBAND. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
