About Neon Genesis Evangelion

This game is an interactive adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion for N64. Called Shinseki Evangelion in Japan, the Gainax-produced anime series originally aired from October '95 to March '96 and soon spawned a feature movie release in '97. The N64 game starts in the year 2015, 15 years after Second Impact. The Angels have returned and suddenly attack Tokyo-3. Using so-called "terror-fields" that cannot be penetrated by ordinary weapons, the Angels are taking on every human force sent out to oppose them. That's where you come in. As the pilot of the NERV-designed Evangelions, Shinji Ikari, you take your giant humanoid combat mech into battle with the Angels. Gameplay can best be described as interactive anime, as it relies heavily on timed button presses.

A Japan-only Evangelion mech fighter admired for its cutscenes, and one of the pricier Japanese carts in the library.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, also called Evangelion 64, is a 1999 fighting game published by Bandai and released only in Japan, in June 1999. BEC, a Bandai subsidiary, developed it. Players control Evangelion Unit-01 against the Angels in a game that alters the anime's story and has endings of its own.

Critics repeatedly noted its graphics and cutscenes as among the most technically impressive on the console, with voice clips from the anime squeezed onto the cartridge. Opinion on the game itself was less kind: N64 Magazine's Jes Bickham was disappointed in its quality.

How it was made

Developed by BEC, a subsidiary of Bandai, and published by Bandai. Kozo Igarashi and Yutaka Nagayama are credited as designers, Yutaka Nagayama as programmer and Jun Enoki as composer.

“ultimately Neon Genesis Evangelion is more of an intriguing curio than a true game, and is thus recommended purely to fans who happen to own an N64.”

— N64 Magazine, November 1999

Before you buy

This is a Japanese-release cart, priced well above the median even among Japan-only games, and complete and sealed copies cost a good deal more than loose. Fake risk is medium, so ask for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test; a cart that boots proves nothing. It is a Japan-only release with limited appeal to players unfamiliar with the series.
