The exaggerated arcade football of Midway's Blitz, made for friends on a couch.
This page covers the N64 version of NFL Blitz, Midway's 1997 arcade game, released on the N64 in North America in September 1998. The arcade team was headed by Mark Turmell and Sal Divita, who had worked on NBA Jam, and the game was a deliberate attempt to bring that exaggerated arcade approach to football. In its first month on sale the N64 version was the eighth best-selling home console game in the United States.
It was nominated for the AIAS Console Sports Game of the Year, which went to 1080 Snowboarding.
How it was made
The arcade game was developed by Midway, headed by Mark Turmell and Sal Divita.

“This port of Blitz is phenomenal. All of the action from the arcades has been transported to the N64 with very little variation or flaw.”
“Great graphics, pumped sounds, custom controls, killer replay … Arcade fans, save your quarters — the N64 Blitz is on!”
“Fans of the arcade NFL Blitz will love this though, because with the addition of the Play Editor, the N64 version is exactly the same.”
“The game has advanced nicely in a very short span of time, so it seemed only appropriate that we update you on the progress of this excellent action football game.”

How the Nintendo 64 version differs
A period preview found the N64 version a bit less flashy than the arcade game, though the two-player football plays identically.
The N64 cartridge adds an in-game play editor, Rumble Pak support and save options that the arcade game did not have.
N64 Magazine found the graphics fairly good but not quite up to the arcade version's standard.

| Arcade | Midway |
- Arcade. The arcade game supports just two players, a deliberate choice by the team, who felt a football game has too little action between quarterback and receiver for four players.
- PlayStation. Next Generation liked the PlayStation version but warned that, like the arcade game, the lack of play variety can get stale, especially in single-player mode.

Before you buy
The price on this page is for the standard North American cartridge, which sits right around the median for the library. A Special Edition is also listed, at several times the price of the standard cartridge loose and complete, so confirm exactly which version a seller is offering. At this price the fake risk is medium: ask for a photo of the board, because a cartridge that boots proves nothing. Sealed copies cost many times a loose one.
